Elks snap Jackets' 16-game streak

Mike James - The Independent
Round Valley's Brett Haws gets a piece of the ball Blue Ridge's Farron Kinney hopes to put through the hoop. The Elks downed the Yellow Jackets, breaking their 16 game winning streak Tuesday in Round Valley's dome.
EAGAR - After struggling for three quarters before using a big final period to rally past St. Johns and push their winning streak to 16 games in a row the previous night, the Yellow Jackets couldn't pull out another one on Tuesday.
Round Valley's 2-3 zone defense frustrated Blue Ridge all night and the Elks finished with a 23-6 run over the final 8:45 to pull away in a game tied 32-32 late in the third quarter in beating the visiting Jackets 55-38.
The Elks pushed their winning streak to 11 games while handing Blue Ridge its first defeat in six and a half weeks.
Round Valley hasn't lost since falling 67-58 to Flagstaff Coconino in the third-place game at Blue Ridge's White Mountain Holiday Classic on Dec. 31. The Elks, who lost 71-55 at Blue Ridge on December 15, improved to 22-6 overall and 7-2 in the 3A East and kept their hopes of sharing the 3A East championship alive with one game remaining for both teams.

Jackets clinch at least share of East -
Win 15th straight game

Mike James - The Independent
Blue Ridge's Kenny Kellywood tries to block a shot attempt by Show Low's Dallan McClanahan (25) as teammate Jud VanWinkle (2) assists. The Yellow Jackets downed the Cougars 58-42 Jan. 29 in Show Low.
The football titles occur so frequently that it's not difficult to keep track of them.
But Blue Ridge basketball championships don't come along that often.
      Neither do 15-game winning streaks.
So this is a special season for the Yellow Jackets, whose 58-42 win at Show Low on Friday night clinched at least a share of the 3A East boys basketball championship with two games remaining.
It's Blue Ridge's first region crown since 2000-01.
And the way the Jackets are playing this season it appears they won't be sharing the title with anyone.
