Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests confirms another horse death

On April 24, 2019, the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests published a press release confirming that, "one horse was found deceased Friday, April 19, 2019."

The release states that "a contracted necropsy expert was also called to the scene to conduct an investigation" in which "three shell casings were recovered from the location."

This brings the total number of documented cases of deceased horses on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests to 19.

Today's press release is the second press release issued in April regarding the horse deaths in the vicinity of the Heber Wild Horse Territory.

The first was published on April 16, 2019, confirming that a deceased horse was located on Forest Road 51, also outside of the Heber Wild Horse Territory.  " ... the remains were too decomposed for necropsy" so the "...date and cause of death are unknown."

If the public encounters an injured or deceased horse they are urged to contact the Black Mesa Ranger District at 928-535-7300 to report it immediately. The public is asked to pass along all tips to the Navajo County Sheriff's Office tip line at 1-800-78CRIME.
