SNOWFLAKE — Trusting in the natural process of birth without the burden of fear is just one part of the overall philosophy of Conscious Choices Birth Center in Snowflake.

“We provide evidence-based care in a relaxed atmosphere and our goal is to facilitate a safe, natural and joyous birthing experience,” explains direct entry midwife (DEM) and owner, Lorraine Ferrante.

She has 35 years of nursing experience, a Bachelor’s degree in social work and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) also certified in birth and postpartum doula. “We believe that midwives help women have healthier, happier pregnancies, births and beyond,” she says.

In addition to Ferrante, the staff includes office manager and prenatal/labor assistant Sarah Martin, Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) Margie Kline and Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) Mitzi Reed.

Comprehensive midwifery is what Conscious Choices specializes in for women and families in all stages of pregnancy. “A natural childbirth means family intimacy — your family and loved ones are encouraged to get involved,” explains Ferrante. There is also an emphasis on the “normalcy” of natural childbirth.

The birth center also believes that “birth is a natural bodily process that works best when there’s no interference,” however they are steadfast about evaluating the mother’s well-being at every visit. Monthly child birth education classes, prenatal yoga, gentle trimester stretching and nutritional classes, breastfeeding support and a lending library are some of the additional resources offered to women before, during and after pregnancy.

When it comes to the full spectrum of care for expectant mothers and their families, Conscious Choices provides longer appointment times which builds relationships, emotional support and a comfort level that you may not find in the traditional, clinical obstetrics setting.

The staff works at building mutual trust, according to Ferrante, and accomplishes that by having “information, answers and the support needed to have a safe birth.”

“We will spend time at every visit discussing ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle through good eating, exercise and maintaining a healthy outlook on life,” says the staff.
