Seventeen local Native women were awarded a total of $34,500 in scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year at a board meeting of Native Women Scholars, Inc. held on July 9.

The women are attending Northern Arizona University, Fort Lewis College, Grand Canyon University, the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, American Indian College, the Institute of American Indian Art and the University of New Mexico.

The scholarships were made possible by the highly successful “An Evening of Apache Culture” event held June 9 in cooperation with the Apache Tribe and the Town of Pinetop-Lakeside, as well as generous donations. NWS, Inc., is a 501c3 non-profit corporation.

The women are studying business, mechanical engineering, physical therapy, natural resources, veterinary medicine, nursing, public health, fine art, education and other disciplines.

Tax deductible contributions can be made to Native Women Scholars, Inc., PO Box 2981, Pinetop, AZ 85935. Every dollar contributed goes directly into scholarships with no overhead expenses.
