Blue Ridge fourth grader reads over 5 million words this year

Blue Ridge Fourth grader TJ Hess proudly shows off his certificate, medal and tee shirt that he won by reading over 5 million words this year.

LAKESIDE — Fourth grader TJ Hess read 5,014,082 words this year. He was the top reader at Blue Ridge Elementary School. All of the Blue Ridge fourth graders read over a million words but Hess read 2.5 million more than any other student.

The word count is part of the Accelerated Reader program which encourages students to read and then take a quiz verifying the book was read and understood at a 70% or better level. The word count is then calculated and credited to the student’s running word count.
