Good news comes to the mountain this winter as the Blackwood Gospel Quartet returns to the White Mountains with a powerful message of hope. The free concert is open to the public. The Blackwood Gospel Quartet performs Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. The performance will be held at Valley View Southern Baptist Church on Main Street, Hwy 77 in Snowflake.

Headed by Mark Blackwood, the gospel singers pull together, talent, skill, enthusiam and highly polished performances to audiences all over the United States. During January and early February, these four professionals bring their spiritual program to metro and rural churches in the west.

Mark Blackwood, second generation of Blackwood gospel singers, first performed with The Blackwood Little Brothers when he was nine. Gospel music was part of the family for over two decades when Mark stepped up the microphone. Mark, a baritone has won two Grammy awards for recording produced for The Blackwood Brothers Quartet. A recent album by mark is titled "Let Me Tell You the News." The Blackwood Gospel Quartet is soon releasing a new album coming out featuring songs such as "Peace Be Still." Mark's group is based in Knoxville, Tenn.

Cecil Blackwood, Mark's father joined the famous and award-winning group the Blackwood Brothers Quartet in 1954. The original group formed in 1934. Cecil sang baritone for the group for 46 years.

Tenor Dale Evans hails from Tennessee and embraces a love of gospel music. Like group leader Mark, Dale was raised singing at an early age with his family group.

David Mann is baritone and lead singer for the Blackwood Gospel Quartet. His love of vocal music started when he was a toddler. He has sung in many groups and church choirs.

Brad Smith brings a remarkable bass voice to the quartet. He counts it a blessing he has been involved with gospel music for two decades. Brad was a member of the New Speers and Impacts. Twice, Brad has been nominated for "Male Vocalist of the Year" by the Gospel Voice Magazine.
