Weekend gas leak, power outage shuts down Walmart

A customer leaves the Show Low Walmart store on Sunday, June 30. The employee in the background was in the process of locking the doors and had just put up a sign that read “closed due to power loss”.

SHOW LOW — The Walmart store located at 5401 S. White Mountain Road in Show Low closed on Sunday, June 30 for approximately seven hours due to a freon gas leak and/or power outage.

The doors were closed and locked at approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday and handwritten sign was hung on the outside of the southwest door that read, “store closed due to power loss.” In addition, an employee at the door told several customers trying to enter the store that the problem was due to loss of power.

Social media posts from customers that visited the store said the closure was due to a freon leak with the freezers, however that information has not been confirmed.

“We will be open as of 5PM! Thank you to all of our customers for understanding. We do apologize!” read the store’s Facebook page at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

At approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, July 1, the store’s Facebook page post read, “We are open. At this time we are unable to sell any perishable items. We have technicians onsite. As soon as we have any updates we will post on our social media.”

Additional social media posts indicated power outages in the Wagon Wheel area on Sunday morning and afternoon, however it is unclear if the power outage incidents were related.

Calls to the Walmart store manager on Monday, July 1, were not returned prior to press time.
