No gas leak at Safeway

Police evacuated the Show Low Safeway grocery store Tuesday, July 10, after ta call about a possible problem with gas lines.

SHOW LOW — Police evacuated the Safeway grocery store in the 900 west block of the Deuce of Clubs around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 10 after they got a call from Safeway management about a noise in their gas lines.

Show Low Police and Timber Mesa Fire responded, evacuating the store and closing it to the public and Safeway employees as firefighters tried to determine what was happening.

Both employees and customers milled in the parking lot waiting to see what, if anything, was the matter.

Timber Mesa Battalion Chief Conrad Loney said once it was determined that there was no problem with gas lines, firefighters were directed to the deli area to see if there was any kind of a problem there.

Timber Mesa Community Fire Risk Manager Kirk Webb said it turned out that there was a non-gas related issue with one of the fryers in the deli section.

“I think it was right around 4 p.m. that we finished up and the store reopened,” Webb said.

He did not know the exact nature of the problem with the fryer that created the situation.

Safeway employees and the manager said they could not comment on the situation.
