Have you considered...Are birds more important than humans or other animals?

It’s interesting that the director of the Office of Environmental Policy is chastising the Department of the Interior for not doing enough to protect migratory and other birds from harm from cell towers and “non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation emitted by them (cell towers and phones.)”

In a letter sent to Secretary of the Interior Eli Veenendaal, it states: “The second significant issue associated with communication towers involves impacts from non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation emitted by these structures. Radiation studies at cellular communication towers were began circa 2000 in Europe and continue today on wild nesting birds. Study results have documented nest and site abandonment, plumage deterioration, locomotion problems, reduces survivorship, and death.”

Well go figure. It seems that the fight against smart meters and the smart grids have to involve government regulations on birds and animals to capture anyone’s attention. But what is harmful to birds is harmful to every living thing.

Smart meters emit non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation and still the electric industry says they cause no harm. Not even when placed on your house and not a cell tower. If some departments of the government can say that these devices are harmful, why can’t the rest of the government and the communications and electric industries do the same?

“Nesting migratory birds and their offspring have apparently been affected by the radiation from cellular phone towers in the 900 and 1800 MHz frequency ranges — 915 MHz is the standard cellular phone frequency used in the U.S. However, the electromagnetic radiation standards used by the Federal Communications Commission continue to be based on thermal heating, a criterion now nearly 30 years out of date and inapplicable today.”

Pay close attention to that last sentence. It is the same argument smart meter opponents have used that was denied by everyone.

Even if someone were to say that birds nest near or on the towers, is that any different than smart meters on bedroom walls where small children sleep? The birds cited in this letter include eagles. Babies are smaller than eagles and can be affected as much if not more from the radiation.

“This is primarily due to the lower levels of radiation output from microwave-powered communication devices such as cellular telephones and other sources of point-to-point communications.”

I believe the point-to-point communications would include smart meters, as that is what they do.

“Radiation at extremely low levels (0.0001 the level emitted by the average digital cellular telephone) caused heart attacks and the deaths of some chicken embryos subjected to hypoxic conditions in the laboratory while controls subjected to hypoxia were unaffected.”

The letter also states that there have been no independent, third-party field studies conducted in North American on impacts of tower electromagnetic radiation on migratory birds. What about humans?

Doesn’t it seem like simple common sense that if ill effects and death have been found in some studies and now every home in America is destined to emit this non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation that studies should be done on all living things?

“There is a growing level of anecdotal evidence linking effects of non-thermal, non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation from communication towers on nesting and roosting wild birds and other wildlife in the U.S.”

There is all kinds of evidence out there that radiation is harmful. Why is it taking so long to admit that? Why are we being subjected to more radiation from countless sources and not studying the effects?

Could it be that those companies heavily invested in all this technology already know the answers, but don’t want to lose their money?

The next time someone says that cell phones and smart meters are perfectly safe; tell them that if they’re not safe for birds, then they aren’t safe for the rest of us living beings.

Well Karen , you are most definitely barking up the right tree and have touched upon some interesting and scary aspects of our continuing take - over . The increase in the erection of these microwave towers is alarming , just look at all the new towers that are springing up all over the area we inhabit . The cornerstone of any ruling establishment is energy , combined with data mining and the ability to pacific it's subjects . These towers ( and meters ) emit frequency levels that are capable of bombarding the human brain into a placid almost mesmerized state of compliance , much akin to the light and sound frequencies emitted from the television that lull it's watchers into an almost hypnotic state of consciousness , an electronic drugging of sorts . This is one reason why there has been very little opposition and minimal outrage against our continued take - over by the dark side .

The most potent weapons are the ones that you are not even unaware of . The marketing of such gadgets as cell phones make these weapons all the more lethal as the subjects will actually run and embrace them with open arms and empty minds . We now have a generation of young people who have had their minds completely rewired by these technologies - and it's getting frightfully worse with each passing day . Cell Towers are the new Church Steeples for the technocratic age as technology has become the new god and these hideous structures have long since replaced the traditional church steeples that once dominated the skylines of small town America . Brings to mind the old Simon and Garfunkel song ,The Sounds of Silence , where the people " bowed and prayed to the neon god they'd made ". In the Year 2525 , by Zager and Evans perhaps also .

An additional fact that many are ignorant of , is that America has been ruled by way of a De Facto Government ever since October 21 , 1945 , when it surrendered it's national sovereignty in order to become a charter member of the United Nations . Both this , and the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 , are major discussions in and of themselves , understanding the ramifications of these are essential to gaining even a rudimentary understanding as to why we have gone over the cliff as a nation and as a people . In the meantime , the NSA Data Mining Center in Bluffdale , Utah can catalogue this and store it away for a future use ( weapon ) and the idiots in the mainstream media can tell the peons more tales of the " pings " being heard from the fairy tale du jour of Malaysian Flight 370 . All of course while the Four Horsemen gallop towards the horizon of mankind's destiny . Oh , and don't forget to get your new " smart " phone or an Ipad to help you pick - up the slack caused by the damage to your brain . And Yes , they will erect more towers to make sure that you are " connected " . But to whom ?

Also , I too have noticed a decrease in bird populations and frequency of varieties of birds compared to what there used to be in years past . I attribute this decline to the chem - trails being sprayed in the sky overhead as well . But that is another issue .

djrefusal ; You sure do have a way with word . Karen is attempting to awaken people to a very real danger surrounding them and to help illustrate the deeper picture behind this illusion that most people call the world . Yet , all you saw fit to contribute to the discussion was to insult her ( and yourself more so ) . Perhaps you ought to follow your own advice given to her .

Karen, I won't be as rude as others in expressing a bit of disagreement here. However, with a scientific background, I should point out that sunlight is radiation too, as is the dentist's x-ray and mammograms.

Technically, it is possible for RF (non-ionizing radiation) to sort of jiggle the DNA in one's cells, including brain cells, and that is probably not wise, But we at a stage in our technology where there is no way we can protect ourselves from own electronics. A cell phone, in my opinion, is far more dangerous than a smart meter. So are microwave ovens.

All-in-all, we are gaining far more benefits than we are risking health at this stage of our human progress.

Karen, thank you for this article. Often, problems in our environment that emerge as being harmful to humans at times start showing up in other animals, such as birds (DDT being another example). This is something I'm going to look into more myself; again, thanks (and the first person who commented was really rude, so I hope my comment offset that one just a little bit!).

That is an ugly comment to make to anyone - espcially to an astute youn reporter.

Although I do not totally agree with her on this issue, she has brought out some important examples of her POV.

I think you owe her a Constitutional Apology.

Karen--good article which could probably be tied to the canary in the mine quite easily.
Now a few things
PCS is divided in to two frequencies and uplink and a downlink. The uplink is the frequency your phone uses at fairly low power that is in a power control link with the mobile base station and is typcially the lower of the two frequencies operating on batteries at low power. 1990MHz is the highest frequency used by the base station which has considerably more power with CDMA being around 16W. So those towers have more radiation than the mobile. Did you ever see a cell tower in a school yard and wonder about the kids?
Data services that we have become psychologically addicted to require better signal to noise ration to operate at high speeds. It is a well-known and viable informational law even with computational power and techniques that allow us to go below the noise floor. What it means to the lay person, is that to get streaming video and high speed internet to a power limited phone, you need more cell towers across the landscape which is why new towers are going up in the region to provide 4G service. Higher data speeds means more non-ionizing radiation.
Now when you get in to WLAN services associated with WiFi, now you are taking 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz albeit power limited to less than a Watt being unlicensed. Your smart meters often use these frequencies or the 900MHz ISM depending on terrain and ability to effectively place Neighborhood collectors. Pine trees and hills are murderous on signal losses in the 2.4GHz and higher bands because the wavelength can be similar to pine needles and such and is effectively absorbed. The absorption by deciduous trees is well documented because wireless coverage changes between summer and winter.
Wavelength of the signal is important because like the pine needle and leaf, the wavelength determines the electrical and magnetic stresses on your tissues not associated with heat but with a property known as material resonance.
We know this stuff is dangerous which is why we created the specific absorption rating index now common with all mobile phones but what about the base station that one lives or works near or under?
Exposure time is critical just like a microwave oven operating at 2.4GHz at lower power just needs longer times but it will still cook. Hydration level, fat content and other individual factors all affect how well you as the hot dog under the tower cook. The longer you stay on the phone the less moisture is available to carry away the energy from the cells. Correct, you wont get cooked in a day or a year maybe but as Europe is seeing that 10+ year cooking time with decades of cell technology is starting to create the evidence for those unexplainable cancers. Hopefully, the canary in the mine will make us sensible that it might be wise to consider the necessity of our addictions including profit above human health.

I'm surprised the government hasn't noticed the correlation between radio frequencies and climate change (Global Warming for those die-hards).

wes alderson

@RHya:

It's great to hear from another scientist here in the White Mountains. Your comments on RF Technology are very astute. Thank you.

And TN - you know dang well RF has nothing to do with climate change.

Wes.

TN4994

Wes: You posted "you know dang well RF has nothing to do with climate change."
No I don't. There isn't enough collected data on the subject, if there is any.
Which is surprising considering the effort given to the incandescent light bulb.
However - -
The Greenhouse Effect includes all energy bouncing back and forth.
Molecules (atoms for that matter) vibrating against one another create heat.
Solar radiation is a form of radio frequency. That's why we get tans and skin-cancer.
Radio-Microwaves cook food.
Most people are aware of X-rays and Gamma rays.
Care to guess what an Echo band radar (At 9500 Watts and focused in a narrow beam of 12.8 centimeters) does to protoplasm at 42.5 meters?

How about the India, Juliet, Golf, and Fox bands?
Do you know radio frequencies can cause florescent and neon lights to glow because of the molecules of gas being agitated?

The question is there to be asked:
"What is the cumulative effect of cell phone transmissions on the environment?"

lakesider

"What is the cumulative effect of cell phone transmissions on the environment?"

Answer: "Grossly less significant than natural sunlight."

I am SHOCKED, that the quality of life, and the average lifespan of both males and females continues to climb.

Personally, I don't have a clue what effect all these "bad things" that everyone is so sure of have on us. What I do know however, is neither does anyone else. There is insufficient data, in a limited amount of time, to reach any conclusions about most of these things. YET we gots lots of folks who are making lots of money from these foolish scare theories of everything from global warming to smart meters to now radiation emitting towers.

In closing I have a friend closely involved with Navopache Electric who was telling me a bout a meeting regarding smart meters and people wearing tinfoil hats---said he had a hard time keeping a straight face and not laughing---I would not have, I would have LOL!

I have digested and chewed my cud on each of the comments you made many times.

Those who feel that some secret government agency is using RF to manipulate climate do not understnad any of the real issues.

Wes: Not saying governmental conspiracy. Just saying that whenever man evolves technology, there is associated cause and effect. Various technologies sometimes produce unwanted side effects. Take the effect of amplified sonar development or the combustible engine for instance.

@Wes Alderson,

I know that since you believe you are "eminently qualified" to espouse your opinion as though it were fact, it's often difficult for you to accept that you might possibly be wrong about anything. This just might be one of those times... again.

"Climatologists have simulated hurricane control based on selective heating and cooling (or prevention of evaporation).[29] Futurist John Smart has discussed the potential for weather control via space-based solar power networks. One proposal involves the gentle heating via microwave of portions of large hurricanes. Such chaotic systems may be susceptible to "side steering" with a few degrees of increased temperature/pressure at critical points. A sufficient network might keep the largest and most potentially damaging hurricanes from landfall, at the request of host nations. Blizzards, monsoons, and other extreme weather are also potential candidates for space-based amelioration. If large-scale weather control were to become feasible, potential negative implications may include:

Unintended side effects, especially given the chaotic nature of weather development
Damage to existing ecosystems
Health risks to humans
Equipment malfunction or accidents
Malevolent control or use as a weapon
ELF hot spots causing slightly accelerated ionospheric depletion by solar wind"

TN, Actually, RF is only one part of the radiation band, and it is not the same as the essential sun rays, which are of an entirely different wave lenght. For that matter, so is heat, which is IR - a way longer wavelength.

You're right, of course, that doppler effects are present whenever we move something by us with a noisy combustion engine. That is why the pitch of a siren seems to drop after an ambulance passes, and it is in some senses, why there are sonic booms.

Any tech advance has unexpected effects. In fact you will be hearing soom of unanticipated effects on the body of logic itself, due to the scientfic verificationl of the "God PARTICLE" - IE the Higgs Boson.

I agree that we "clever" human beings have trouble keeping up lives to catch our own imaginations.

wes alderson

TN and Ron,

I have not yet verified my source, but latest news is that Google has outbid Amazon to acquire a Drone Manufacturers. Just think of that. Google already has those automated, driverless cars. Now, to have planes flying around with no humans on board? That would be incredible.

Karen,
Maybe you could report on how air bags in automobiles kill people once in a while, and ignore the facts of how many lives are saved each year by airbags.

You are not a scientist, nor engineer, and are writing outside your sphere of technical experience.

@TN4994,

I've never heard of a "combustible engine." What exactly does it do?[wink]

TN4994

Brad: The combustible engine is a new money making ploy by ***** (the car company that brought you the ignitable ignition) . One use gets you about 200 kilometers and then it goes up in flame. Or I could admit that I left out the word internal, which (when one thinks about it, is also not quite right).

Wes: I'll see your s = 300/f and raise you a tidbit of knowledge.
The majority of emergency vehicles broadcast the travel warning towards the front of the vehicle and not in an omnidirectional pattern. This is part of the reason why the pitch and volume drops as the ambulance passes you.

wes alderson

Before I reply to brad . . . .

TN, no, doppler effect is dopper effect, regardless of the "Q" ( the directivity) of the sound. I spent 20 of my 40 years in tech business as an audio engineer.

Thanks for the joke about the internal combustion engine.

wes alderson

Brad, the idea of sattelite steering of weather sysems and other manipulations would work SOMETIMES although the cost would be prohibitive.

For example, we would have to catch a hurricane right on the verge of either sailing on into the Antilles on the Easterly trades, or veering north toward Bermuda, in order to have much effect on the course. The reason is that, during the hurricane season, a hugely powerful eastery flow exists in the Atlantic Ocean, under the Bermuda High Pressure Center.

Now and then, the easterly flow is interrupted for a couple of days by a wayward westerly jet stream off our Atlantic Coast, which offers a shielding, steering effect. Catch the hurricane there, at the crux, and you might give it a nudge to the north.

But these global winds have so much "fetech" that their power to guide weather is amazing. We can't go head to head with them and beat them.

On the other hand, during the Monsoon Season, here in Lakeside, if we can trigger a thunderstorm, say fifty miles sound ouf us before it comes up the rim, we might be able to enhance our rainfall by an tremendous amount. This would depend on our fanning down an area at, say, Globe, from several sattelites, early in the day and let that area then travel downwind to the rim. Of course that only works when the steering currents are from the South.

One of the nice things about the Thunderstorm trigger effect is that, once it starts, it tends to enhance itself because the latent heat of condensation is release once the updrafts begin.

Wes Alderson, CPW.

TN4994

Wes: Thus we come to the shape of the woofer (or broadcasting horn) needed to accomplish said doppler effect in a given area at a given frequency for maximum effect.
