Dear Citizens of Eagar,

Over the past several weeks I have been asked repeatedly what the Town of Eagar plans to do about Covid-19, masks, visitors, riots, etc. It is somewhat alarming how many expect and almost invite a more drastic infringement on their freedoms. My response from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has been that we will err on the side of freedom. When riots began to riddle the country and our governor took the drastic measure of a statewide curfew, again, I maintained that we will err on the side of freedom. I have received numerous phone calls from reporters, citizens, visitors, and complete strangers to our area asking why the Town of Eagar has not cancelled upcoming rodeos and our 4th of July parade. Again, my response is that Eagar will err on the side of freedom. What authority does the Town of Eagar, or any other state or local government, have to infringe on the rights of healthy law-abiding citizens?

It bears mentioning that I am not one that believes that the coronavirus is fake or any one of a dozen other theories disseminating across the internet. COVID-19 is a real virus that unfortunately has drastic negative effects on the health of some of the individuals that contract it. Just as with the flu virus, some of those individuals will die. I do not make light of the fact that its effects on individuals and families throughout the globe have been and will continue to be life changing and/or life ending.

There are many individuals that risk serious peril if they were to contract the virus. Those individuals should take extreme precautions. I certainly would were I in their position. In fact, I would invite those individuals to please stay home and not attend our festivities. But don’t ask that the government require it of healthy law-abiding citizens. If an individual is fearful of contracting the virus, I would invite that individual to take every precaution they deem fit; including wearing masks, gloves, or a variety of other personal protective equipment. Those precautions do not harm me and I will not judge you adversely for doing what you feel is best for you. But don’t ask that the government require it of healthy law-abiding citizens.

As grim as COVID-19 is portrayed under the most drastic scenario, I dare say that we are facing a much more serious pandemic here in America. We are currently in the midst of the nation’s first political pandemic. Never before in the history of America has ignorance and bigotry been more celebrated. Never before has our government been more eager and willing to take away freedoms from the citizenry. Never before has the citizenry been more willing to give them up. Benjamin Franklin warned that “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety”. I believe his warning is as applicable today as it ever was. Some will say that these safety measures have not impacted individual liberty. To them I would quip Thomas Jefferson: “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” The right to move about freely in public is one of the cornerstones of American democracy. In a panicked frenzy, created by the media, state and local governments trampled that right wholesale. History will not judge us kindly for our actions over the past several months.

In closing, where would America be if our ancestors that pioneered the countryside, facing a mortality rate that would make the coronavirus look like a scratch, had simply given up, turned back, or laid down and died out of fear? Where would America be if its brave service men and women, who throughout history have on occasion faced odds of almost certain death, simply refused to fight out of fear? When did we stop being the land of the free and the home of the brave? Take charge of your own life. Nobody owes you anything. The government has never been more ill equipped to solve your problems nor is it its function to do so. This is America! Stand up and be somebody! Be brave and live free.

Not very smart. Just last week I've been picking up 2 deceased family belongings that were willed to me. My 29 year old cousin and my 48 year old uncle who unfortunately passed away from covid. No matter what anyone says about this virus it's not going to change anybody's mind or opinions. The only time people will change is when something happens to them or their loved ones. Please protect yourselves from this virus my fellow people.

"If an individual is fearful of contracting the virus, I would invite that individual to take every precaution they deem fit; including wearing masks... I will not judge you adversely for doing what you feel is best for you. "

Unfortunately Mr. Mayor, your statement did indeed judge other people for wearing masks. You imply that the reason people wear masks is that they are fearful for their own safety. Many people are wearing masks, not because of selfish reasons, but because they care enough about other people to protect them from unnecessary exposure to the virus. And some people just feel it's common sense to wear a mask in the middle of a pandemic. Your judgement of those wearing masks is there whether you can admit it to yourself or not. And by the way, mask wearers also value freedom.

"The government has never been more ill equipped to solve your problems nor is it its function to do so." Interpretation: I, Mayor Hamblien am the head of the government of the town of Egar and I am ill equipted to solve any problems afflicting the people of Eagar. Besides it is not the function of the Eagar government entities to solve their residents problems. It is only to take your tax dollars.

"This is America! Stand up and be somebody! Be brave and live free." Interpretation: Don't pay attention to the signs that say "no shoes, no shirts, no service." Go ahead and drive reckless and speed all you want, don't worry about the safety of others...be brave and live free, remember it's not the function of Mayor Hamblien nor Eagar's government to protect it's residents.

Once again Al stretches the premise by saying not wearing a mask is equal to anarchy. Oh wait, people like him with his liberal ideals have resorted to anarchy and have taken over an entire section of Seattle. Can't have it both ways Al. Your Democrat buddies let it happen and tried claiming it was "Like a street fair" . Really? What street fair has multiple shootings, rapes, property destruction and 2 murders? You liberals are such hypocrites! Funniest story of all was the "defund police" group who wanted Police protection for their rally. LOL get a clue Al, you're on the wrong side of history.

Obviously, republican johndoe is showing his lack of understanding and disregard for the United States Constitution and for it's enumerated purpose of our government. In the Constitution's Preamble and in Article I, Section 8, Clause I, it is enumerated that the purpose of our country is to "Provide and Promote the General Welfare " of "We the People." That means that if you are a government offical like the Mayor, your duty is to mitigate the infections, the deaths of your residents by encouraging the wearing of masks and social distancing and if necessary, take other actions as republican and democrat Governors and have done. What is not helpful is for a government offical to blame a generic government for a national problem that needs to be solved by all levels of government. That is hypocritical.

There he goes - pulling his old ripped up US Constitution out of the woodpile again...

johndoe... Thanks for being one of the voices of reason wh participate here. Common sense is in short supply! [wink]

Again Al,I'm not a republican, I am a registered independent. I agree with views from both sides as well as have my own opinions. Unlike you I do not just follow whatever a party tells me to. Most republicans are devout Christians, I do not believe in a magical man in the sky. Most republicans are against LGBT rights, I say they should be able to marry and have equal rights in all respects. I am far from a Trump lover, in fact I think a lot of what he does is open for ridicule. I do however support whomever is in charge in the White house because it is stupid to want the pilot of the plane you are on to crash. Oh and Al, if your party has their way the constitution will be burned along with all of the statues you now suddenly find offensive. I'm offended by all of the Jesus statues, can we tear them all down please? I'm offended by Colonel Sanders, remove him from the KFC logos! I'm offended by the name cracker barrel, I demand it be changed! Yes Al you show how you and your ilk want the government to hold your hand, wipe your bottom and solve all of your problems. Keep that wool over your eyes Al, the real world is far too complicated for you to navigate it seems.

Johndoe read and understand: "Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president." ....republican President Theodore Roosevelt

Mayor Hamblin... You are absolutely right. I wish everyone would get off this destructive 'we're all in this together' need to signal support for a manufactured crisis that is causing our economy to implode. Yes, c-19 needs to be addressed, but not at the expense of the majority of Americans who are suffering more from the restrictions imposed by legislators than from the virus.

I agree!

I believe that the citizens of Eagar are blessed to have this mayor, and would be wise to keep him! Too many government officials want stomp on what the Constitution clearly states about our freedoms. God gave us all a brain, and we are responsible to use it. Ultimately each person is responsible to make their own choices, and deal with the results, period. We are adults, so we should act like it by doing our own research and act accordingly.

lkm2020

I agree!

Meivayden

Not sure if the Mayor will actually read this, but, Bless you for having a brain and a heart!

My thoughts beyond the thank you to a very intelligent mayor.

People like ArizAl getting into arguments over things he does not understand... such as Freedom... need to be left behind in the shards of glass they sit upon. Shield your heart from these kinds of individuals, who mean to stoke fear and hate for your fellow human beings. At this point in time, it is our responsibility, as a people, to make our futures firm and steadfast. Do not let fear pouring out of other peoples mouths stop you from living and upholding firm foundations for future generations. If we fail, if we give in to anarchy and subjugation, all will be lost. Not only for us, but for even the children of those stoking fires of fear and hate. No one will be left to stand up for us or them, if we fail surmount this hurdle. It is true, if you want to wear a mask and gloves, then do so, but trying to usurp power and smash down the rights of other individual beings, does not make a right in a world gone wrong. We have to think very clearly about what we are doing in these turbulent times. Do not stop living and above all, do not take up a whip for these wrong causes. Causes built up on foundations of suppression, under the guise of 'good for all' when it is only power for a handful, leaving us, the people with nothing but huge regrets.
