White Mountain Independent Publisher Brian Kramer leads our season standings by seven games over his nearest rival with two weeks left in our Fearless contest.
But there is still a long way to go. We have high school semifinals this week along with a few highly important college games, then next week, we have the prep finals along with 10 college rivalry games, so Kramer is still within reach of a few of us. With some luck, we can still catch him by season’s end.
Our overall leaders, Kramer and ad rep Mark “WMI Guy” Ruiz, both were 11-4 last week for the best record among our regulars. I still refused to pick the pros and still went 10-5. I trail Ruiz by two games and lead Jordan Glenn (fourth after 9-6 week) by three.
Roger Thompson went 13-2 and won the tiebreaker to win the gift certificate to The Black Bull in Show Low. Way to go. He only missed the Arizona State and Dallas losses.
Two weeks ago, Steven Wapaha was our winner with a 9-6 record in a super tough week. He came closest on the tiebreaker (which was 116 points in the Mogollon-Williams game) with a forecast of 107. Wapaha wins the gift certificate to Aliberto’s Restaurant in Wagon Wheel.
Our sponsor of a $25 gift certificate for our winner this week is The House Yard Barn and Eatery in Show Low. It is located right behind Kentucky Fried Chicken at 1191 E. Hall.
My big thing to have there is the Bonfire Shrimp. It is crispy fried shrimp with Bonfire sauce and served on fresh cabbage. In fact the smell of shrimp and scallions alone is hard to pass up.
Or you can have the House Burger. It is an eight-ounce beef patty with roasted poblano chili, pepper jack cheese, fried onion strings and chipotli aioli.
The House also has salads and chili, several appetizers and sandwich options, decadent dessets, a kids’ menu and gluten-free choices.
There is still a lot to be settled before our contest is over for the regular season. All the games from here on could go either way.
Almost all of our regular forecasters like the Round Valley Elks to get past Santa Cruz Valley in Saturday’s 2A semifinals, but in the other semifinal, there is some variety of opinion. We are split nearly 50-50 on Phoenix Christian and Thatcher.
We are also pretty much split on the 3A semifinal between Queen Creek powers American Leadership and Casteel. But all but two of us like top-seeded Pusch Ridge Christian to get to the final on Nov. 25.
We are thinking alike on most of the college and pro games this week. There is some doubt on the Arizona at Oregon game. Everybody likes Stanford over Cal.
Just wait until next week.
Good luck and drive safely to all your games.
