Recommended Waters to Fish

Most Forest roads are now open, including the Rim Road (FR 300), FR 89 to Bear Canyon Lake, FR 169 to Chevelon Canyon Lake, FR 105 to Woods Canyon Lake, FR 149 to Willow Springs Lake, FR 86 to Black Canyon Lake, FR 117-117A-118 to Carnero Lake, FR 56 to Hulsey Lake, and FR 249 to Big Lake. Highways 273 and 261 are still closed to Crescent Lake, Lee Valley Lake, and Sheep’s Crossing. Patterson Ponds and Show Low Creek Meadows were stocked two weeks ago, while Hulsey Lake, Woodland Lake, and Black Canyon Lake are being stocked this week. Carryover trout should be good at Carnero Lake, Becker Lake, Luna Lake, Big Lake, Chevelon Lake, and Woods Canyon Lake.

Mogollon Rim Lakes

  • BEAR CANYON LAKE – Fishing is fair. Forest Roads 300 (Rim Road) and 89 are now open and the lake is ice free.
  • BLACK CANYON LAKE – Fishing is Good. Forest Roads 300 (Rim Road) and 86 are now open and the lake is ice free. The lake is getting stocked this week with rainbow trout. The
  • lake level is 9 feet below spill and the new boat ramp is still functional.
  • CHEVELON LAKE – Fishing is fair to good for
  • rainbows and wild brown trout. Forest Roads 300 (Rim Road), 169, and 169B are now open
  • and the lake is ice free. The lake level is way down and launching boats will be difficult. Chevelon Lake is a hike-in lake with a two trout limit and artificial fly/lure only regulations.
  • WILLOW SPRINGS LAKE – Fishing is fair. Forest Road 149 is open and the lake is ice free.
  • WOODS CANYON LAKE – Fishing is fair. Forest Roads 300 (Rim Road) and 105 are open and the lake is ice free. There is some construction on the 105 road, but access to the lake is open.

Pinetop/Show Low Lakes

  • FOOL HOLLOW LAKE – Fishing is fair. The lake is ice free.
  • RAINBOW LAKE – Fishing is poor. The lake is ice free, but the level is down about 2 feet.
  • SCOTT RESERVOIR – Fishing is poor. The lake is ice free, but the lake level is extremely low and turbid. Can’t launch boats from the boat ramp.
  • SHOW LOW LAKE – Fishing is fair for holdover rainbow trout. The lake is ice free.
  • WOODLAND LAKE – Fishing will be good when it is stocked this week with rainbow trout. The lake is ice free, but also low and a little weedy. A recent fish population survey found lots of bass (mostly 1-2 pounds) and catfish (up to 4.6 pounds). These warm water fish might be a little slow with water temperatures still in the high 40s.
  • PATTERSON PONDS – Fishing is good for trout. Rainbow trout were stocked two weeks ago in both ponds. A regular fishing license or a community fishing license is required to fish here. The pond daily bag limits in community fishing waters (2 trout; 2 catfish; 5 sunfish) apply.

White Mountain Lakes

  • BECKER LAKE – Fishing is fair to good. The lake is ice free. Becker Lake is open to catch-and-release only for trout, artificial fly and lure only; single barbless hooks only. No bait. No trout may be kept. A recent fish population survey found lots of rainbow trout from 14” to 20” (most in the 18-19” range).
  • BIG LAKE – Fishing is fair to good, and the lake is ice free. Highways 273 and 261 are still closed for the winter, but the lake can be reached by Forest Road 249 (paved) from Alpine.
  • CARNERO LAKE – Fishing is good, and the lake is ice free. The water level is fair and the weeds are currently low in the middle. Forest Roads 117, 117A, and 118 are open and clear.
  • CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR – Fishing is poor for trout, but fair for sunfish and bullheads.
  • CONCHO LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake is ice free and was stocked in early March.
  • CRESCENT LAKE – No Access! Highways 273 and 261 are still closed for the winter.
  • GREER LAKES (River; Tunnel; Bunch) – Fishing is fair for wild brown trout, and all three lakes are ice free. Bunch and Tunnel reservoirs are full and launching boats is good. River Reservoir level is down about 9 feet (did not fill) and launching a boat is difficult.
  • BEWARE that the curb at the end of the concrete boat ramp at
  • River is just under the surface about 12 feet from shore (don’t back trailers too far into the water).
  • HULSEY LAKE – Fishing is fair. The lake is ice free and Forest Road 56 is open and clear. This is a good spot to get out of the wind.
  • LEE VALLEY LAKE – No Access. Highways 273 and 261 are still closed for the winter.
  • LUNA LAKE – Fishing is fair to good. The lake is ice free and anglers are catching lots of rainbows and cutthroats.
  • LYMAN LAKE – Lyman Lake State Park is open. Fishing is fair for walleye and catfish. A recent fish population survey found lots of 1-2 pound walleye.
  • NELSON RESERVOIR – Fishing is fair for holdover rainbows. The lake is full and ice free.

White Mountain Streams

  • EAST FORK of the BLACK RIVER – Fishing is fair for wild brown trout. Forest Roads 249, 276, and 26 are open and clear. Flow levels are low (near base flows).
  • LITTLE COLORADO RIVER in GREER – Fishing is fair for wild brown trout. Flow levels are low (near base flows).
  • SHOW LOW CREEK TAILWATER – Fishing is poor.
  • SHOW LOW CREEK MEADOWS (COMMUNITY FISHING WATER) – Fishing is good at this new Community Fishing Water located at the Show Low Bluff trailhead in Show Low. It was stocked with big rainbow trout two weeks ago. Bait can be used, but daily bag limits are 2 trout, 2 catfish, 1 bass (minimum size 13”) and 5 sunfish.
  • SILVER CREEK – Fishing is good. The regulations recently changed to the summer Statewide Regulations season on April 1 (through September 30) that allows bait fishing and 6 trout daily bag limit. The upper section is now closed.
  • SHEEPS CROSSING/West Fork LCR – No access. Highway 273 is still closed for the winter.
  • WEST FORK of the BLACK RIVER — Fishing is fair. Forest Roads 25, 26, and 249 are open and clear. Flow levels are low (near base flows).
