White Mountains and Rim Lakes

Recommended Waters to Fish

Most waters are fishing well since water quality tends to be best in the spring and most waters have been stocked with trout. The best fishing is currently at Woods Canyon Lake, Bear Canyon Lake and Willow Springs Lake on the Rim; Woodland Lake, Show Low Lake, Fool Hollow Lake, Silver Creek, and Show Low Creek in the Pinetop/Show Low area; and Big Lake, Luna Lake, Hulsey Lake, Nelson Reservoir, Greer Lakes, Carnero Lake, Becker Lake, and streams in the Springerville/Alpine area.

MOGOLLON RIM LAKES

  • BEAR CANYON LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake has been stocked with rainbow trout.
  • BLACK CANYON LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake has been stocked with rainbow trout in early April. The lake level is low, at 10.4 feet below spill.
  • CHEVELON LAKE – Fishing is fair to good for rainbows and wild brown trout. The lake level is way down and launching boats will be difficult. Chevelon Lake is a hike-in or ATV accessible lake only, with a two trout limit and artificial fly/lure only regulations.
  • WILLOW SPRINGS LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake has been stocked this week and last week with rainbow trout. The lake level is a low, but can still launch boats.
  • WOODS CANYON LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake has been stocked this week and last week with rainbow trout.

PINETOP/SHOW LOW LAKES

  • FOOL HOLLOW LAKE – Fishing is fair to good. The lake was stocked last week with large sized rainbow trout.
  • RAINBOW LAKE – Fishing is fair to good. The lake was stocked last week with large sized rainbow trout.
  • SCOTT RESERVOIR – Fishing is poor. The lake is extremely low and turbid, and can’t launch boats from the boat ramp. The lake will not be stocked this year.
  • SHOW LOW LAKE – Fishing is fair to good. The lake was stocked last week with large sized rainbow trout.
  • WOODLAND LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake has been stocked heavily over the last 2 weeks and anglers are catching trout on PowerBait and small spinners and Kastmasters. The lake level is very low, but the fishing pier is still usable and the water quality is still good.
  • PATTERSON PONDS – Fishing is good. Trout were stocked several weeks ago and bluegill were stocked last week. A regular fishing license or a community fishing license is required to fish here. The pond daily bag limits in community fishing waters (2 trout; 2 catfish; 5 sunfish) apply.

WHITE MOUNTAIN LAKES

  • BECKER LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake is a little low, but water quality is currently good. Becker Lake is open to catch-and-release only for trout, artificial fly and lure only; single barbless hooks only. No bait. No trout may be kept. A Spring fish population survey found lots of rainbow trout from 14” to 20” (most in the 18-19” range).
  • BIG LAKE – Fishing is good. Recent fish population surveys found good numbers of rainbow and cutthroat trout, including cutthroats up to 20” and over 3 pounds.
  • CARNERO LAKE – Fishing is good. The water level is fair and the weeds are currently low in the middle. Recent fish population surveys found many
  • carryover rainbow trout, most in the 15-16” range, but up to 20” and 5.8 pounds. A few carryover tiger trout were also found up to 19”.
  • CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR – Fishing is fair for trout, and also fair for sunfish and bullheads. The lake was stocked with rainbow trout in mid-April.
  • CONCHO LAKE – Fishing is poor to fair. The lake was stocked with rainbow trout in early March.
  • CRESCENT LAKE – Fishing is poor. The lake is full of fish, but an early algae bloom is limiting water clarity and the fish are not biting.
  • GREER LAKES (River; Tunnel; Bunch) – Fishing is good for stocked rainbow trout and wild brown trout. All three lakes have been stocked with rainbow trout. Bunch and Tunnel reservoirs are full and launching boats is good. River
  • Reservoir level is down about 9 feet (did not fill) and launching a boat is currently okay. Beware
  • of a curb at the end of the concrete boat ramp at River as the water level goes down.
  • HULSEY LAKE – Fishing is good. The lake is full and water is very clear. It has been stocked well with rainbow trout.
  • LEE VALLEY LAKE – Fishing is fair to good. The lake has been stocked with catchable size Apache Trout, first stocking since 2015. The lake is low and an algae bloom may impact success.
  • LUNA LAKE – Fishing is good. Spring fish population surveys found good numbers of carryover rainbows and cutthroat trout. The lake has also been stocked with rainbow trout recently.
  • LYMAN LAKE – Lyman Lake State Park is open. Fishing is fair for walleye and catfish. A recent fish population survey found lots of 1-2 pound walleye.
  • NELSON RESERVOIR – Fishing is good. The lake is full and has been stocked heavily with rainbow trout.
