The Show Low High School wrestling team posted seven podium finishers and finished third at the 52nd Doc Wright Invitational at Winslow last weekend, Jan. 15-16.

Three wrestlers from the White Mountains won championships — St. Johns freshman Kaiden Smith took first at 106 pounds, Snowflake senior Cole Mortensen won the title at 145 pounds, and Mogollon senior Baylend Stephens won his first Doc Wright championship in the heavyweight division.

Thirty-nine teams from all four states in the Four Corners region competed at the tournament, annually one of the largest and most prestigious high school wrestling events in the Southwest.

Cougars Hunter Bateman ((106 pounds) and Willie Wyatt (195) each took third in their weight classes to lead Show Low. Morenci, with 10 wrestlers in the top six, won the team championship with 210.5 points. Chandler Basha (seven in the top six) was second with 166 points, just 11.5 ahead of Show Low (154.5).

“It’s a tough tournament,” said Show Low Head Coach Tim Williams. “Our boys had a really good first day. Our freshmen (Bateman and Tanner Marsh — sixth at 115 pounds) stepped up and medaled at a very tough tournament. All in all it was a team effort.

“It always gets tougher the second day. It helps us get ready for (section and state tournaments) in February when it really counts.”

Also finishing in the top six for the Cougars were Jackson Allen (fourth at 138), Jamie Webb (fifth at 170), and sixth-place finishers Mason Fagotti (132) and Dallin Tenney (182).

Piedra Vista (N.M., 153.5) was fourth in the team standings, followed by Chino Valley (152), Peoria (151), Gilbert Campo Verde (140), Prescott (124) and Snowflake (122) in ninth. St. Johns (91) was 16th in the team standings, Mogollon (71) was 18th, Round Valley (56) was 23rd and Blue Ridge (36) tied for 28th.

Mortensen, who defeated Camp Verde’s Billy Fiore 5-1 in the title match, was one of four Lobos placing in the top six. J.R. Fox (220) was fourth, Leon LaGrange (285) was fifth and Wacey Wood (152) was sixth for Snowflake.

Smith, who defeated Josiah Griego of Aztec, N.M. 5-2 in the title bout, was one of three Redskins with a podium finish. Dawson Avila defeated Show Low’s Jackson Allen 5-3 for third place in one of the more competitive matches in the final round. Also for St. Johns, Brandon Naegle defeated Winslow’s Quentin Begody 8-2 for fifth in the 220-pound class.

Stephens, who often finished second to three-time state champ Santiago over the past three years, pinned Mesa’s Hunter Chapman in the third period of the 285-pound title bout.

“There’s a lot of good competition here,” Stephens said. “It is filled with lots of upper-level wrestlers. I pinned all but one of my opponents. This is really a good push before state (on Feb. 12-13).

“(Chapman) is really good. He gets his hips under him. (Facing him) is really going to help me from here on out.”

Also for Mogollon, senior Brock Slade finished fourth after losing 7-3 to Noah Bello of Tempe McClintock in the third-place match at 160 pounds.

Others placing in the top six were Blue Ridge sophomore Adam Henderson, who defeated Holbrook’s Levi McClellan 5-1 for third at 152 pounds, and Round Valley’s Dylan Workman, who took fourth at 113 pounds. Morenci’s Cory Cota defeated Workman 3-2 in a third overtime period in the third-place match.
