Wildcat coaches visit local alumni

University of Arizona women’s golf coach Laura Ianello, far right, and new UA men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd, far left, flew into the area to attend and speak at a meeting of the local UA alumni association on June 11 in Pinetop. Lloyd talks with Russ Gragg, center, and Peter Callihan. Gragg played baseball at the UA in the 1950s, and later minor-league baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization, and was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Lloyd was hired in April as UA men’s basketball coach. He previously was an assistant coach for 20 years at national powerhouse Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington. In addressing the alumni association, Lloyd said he had looked forward to the day he would be Gonzaga’s head coach but accepted the offer from the UA instead. He said he expects next season’s UA team to work hard and come out fighting. He also said he remembers playing basketball games at McKale Center in Tucson with some success. Ianello, who became the Wildcats women’s golf team head coach in May 2010 after three seasons as the top assistant coach in the program, led the UA to a ninth-place finish in this year’s NCAA championships in Scottsdale. Ianello talked proudly of how the Wildcats upset No. 1 Stanford in the quarterfinal round of the match play portion of the tournament. Ianello is pictured chatting with Nancy Salter at the alumni association social.
